Swim With Spice is…

… a non-profit organization that is dedicated to teaching people of all ages in the North Huntsville/Madison/Decatur area how to swim with confidence and safety. Unintentional drowning is a leading cause of death for children between the ages of 5-14. Our approach to helping resolve this problem in our community is to make learning to swim a reality for a larger segment of our populace.

WHNT News Interview

The Visionista

My name is Shana Howard, and I am a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I am currently living in Huntsville, Alabama. I am a schoolteacher at an elementary school and an adjunct professor at Alabama A&M university. I am a single mother raising two kids.

I am a survivor of a traumatic brain injury (TBI); whereas I find great victory in rephrasing my TBI into a TESTIMONY BEYOND IMAGINATION. I just recently wrote a book named, “BRAIN-E-YAK Wonders” and it explains how I overcame a TBI.

I received my Associates of Arts degree in 2001 from Lawson State Community college, Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Alabama A&M
University in 2005. I obtained my first master’s degree in 2010 from Alabama A&M University in physical education and my second master’s degree in 2018 from Alabama A&M University in Leadership.

Our Program…

“Swim with Spice” is a swimming program that allows the mind to be encouraged through rigorous movement of the body. Conditioning the body through swimming can improve the learning process.

Swimming improves the brain on three levels. First, it optimizes your mind-set to improve alertness, attention, and motivation. Second, it prepares and encourages nerve cells to bind to one another, allowing new information to be stored. And finally, it spurs the development of a child by stimulating growth.

Why

Through this program, we learned there was a great demand for swim lessons in North Huntsville. This led us to facilitate our services within the community. After a short period of time, our clientele has grown rapidly.

Growth

We need a bigger facility to accommodate our needs. We have implemented several strategies including social media marketing to gain more interest in swimming.

Donate

We are asking for your help in securing a larger facility with an indoor swimming pool. You can support our desire to teach our community how to swim like a fish by making a tax deductible donation!

Swim With Spice has changed the way I look at the water. I have always been afraid, and now I have become one with the water.

The goal of Swim with Spice is to offer swim sessions to the people in the community who aren’t normally able to afford them and who do not have access to a swim facility.
